I normally shudder when new acquaintances tell me that they write. I'm not generally big on recommending books I haven't read. But I'm making an exception, because first of all I have heard SUPERLATIVELY good things about this author from some very trustworthy sources, and secondly because I just read the Amazon summary and it sounds spectacular. Also, because my darling <lj user=naamah_darling> has sweetened the deal to the tune of some of her very best art, and I have not yet managed to get my hands on ANY of her work.

So check it out: http://www.amazon.com/Habitation-Blessed-Catherynne-M-Valente/dp/1597801992/ref=tmm_pap_title_0

Come on... doesn't that sound yummy?

EDITED:

Okay, the author is my new hero. Here's her YouTube video explaining the actual historical origins of Prestor John and setting up her book. With action figures of awesomeness.

Abortion Doesn't Affect the Majority of Americans [Nov. 10th, 2009|03:46 pm]
pixxelpuss
Since the Stupak Amendment thing came up, I keep hearing this statement. I'm not going to address the political stuff, but I want to address the statement itself.

At the time of writing, the US population stands at 307,905,212.(1)

Women are just slightly more than 50% of the population of the United States.(2)
So, let's call that 153,952,606 women.

Approximately 1/3 of women will have an abortion at some point in their lifetime. Many more will be pregnant at some point (nearly half of all pregnancies being unintended), but let's just use the number of actual abortions, shall we? So call it 33% of women have abortions.(3)
So let's call that 50,804,360 (technically 359.98, but let's not be absurd).

That's WAY less than half the population!

But let's consider that abortion doesn't exist in a vacuum. Women who have abortions were, without exception impregnated by someone (4). I don't have a handy reference for how many of those pregnancies resulted from sexual contact with strangers, or in the case of rape. I also don't have a handy reference for how many women who get abortions are sexually involved with more than one partner at the time of conception. So I'm not going to account for any of that, and I'll just assume that for every abortion there is one man involved who is affected. God knows the Father's Rights activists think this is the case.

So that's 101,608,720 right there. Still less than a third of the population.

But one of the biggest factors cited when women seek abortion is that there are family considerations (5). And whether it's your family of origin, your spouse, your children, or your chosen family, pretty much everyone has one. Average family size is 3.20.(6) Now, having a kid impacts a lot more than your immediate family, and if abortion isn't available women end up either having kids, or dying- both of which impact the people who live with you and the people who care about you. Most women also have connections outside the home- to friends, to a church, volunteer obligation, school, work, or whatever.(7)

Let's aim low and say that for every woman who has an abortion there are two family members, one friend, and one employer or employee or colleague or classmate who would be affected. Affected how? Well, they might not be affected if a woman has safe, legal access to abortion. They might not ever even know it happened. But if the woman carries the pregnancy to term (leaving aside the question of whether or not she raises the resultant child), there's maternity leave, possible pregnancy complications which could result in long term damage or disability, standard pregnancy fare like morning sickness and urinary urgency and trouble sleeping, potentially the cost of prenatal care and delivery... And if the woman dies due to the risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth (abortion being considerably safer than pregnancy and childbirth(8)), then these people are affected to a much larger degree. So let's say four more people are affected, per woman.

That brings us up to 406,434,880. Yeah, that's more than the total population of the country, and that's me underestimating. Unsurprisingly, people are affected by abortion all the time, without even knowing it. They don't know it because ABORTION DOES THE JOB IT'S SUPPOSED TO.

Not only does Abortion affect the majority of Americans, it affects ALL Americans. They just don't know it.

(2)I don't have a citation for this, actually, but it stands to reason.

(4)Again, it just stands to reason.

In recovery now, surgery went fine [Jul. 13th, 2009|01:20 pm]

(Tim posting)

The surgeon came out to the waiting area and talked to me to say that surgery went fine, as expected. I got a bunch of details about it that I don't understand at all, but Sandra will be fascinated with. Sandra's in recovery now and I'll be able to talk to her in an hour or two when she's recovered enough to be moved to her room.

The only blemish on the whole process was having to provide urine to prove that she was not pregnant, before they would perform the surgery. While very dehydrated, no less. Despite urinalysis _days_ before and her assurances that there was no possible way, the american treatment of fetuses as having greater rights than persons prevailed.

-update-

Oh hey, the room has wifi, and the nurses say it's even okay to use it.
Sandra's feeling better slowly, but she's spent most of the day sleeping. We're watching 'Some Like it Hot' to distract her from feeling nauseated. I'm getting my cot and we'll probaby crash. Soon. Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone.

Filk for Future Reference [Jun. 27th, 2009|08:16 pm]

By far the best Filk I've ever encountered.

The Buff Barbarian Song
a modern parody of Gilbert and Sullivan's
Major-General's Songby Kevin Wald

[We join our operetta already in progress. The infamous Pirates of Pergamum have just seized a bevy of beautiful Mytilenean maidens, and are attempting to carry them off for matrimonial purposes. Gabrielle intervenes, with a recitative (well, it's better than a pan flute solo):]

Gabrielle: Hold, scoundrels! Ere ye practice acts of villainy
Upon the peaceful and agrarian,
Just bear in mind, these maidens of My-TIL-ene[1]
Are guarded by a buff barbarian!

Pirates: We'd better all rethink our cunning plan;
They're guarded by a buff barbarian.

Maidens: Yes, yes, she is a buff barbarian.

[Xena leaps in from the wings, with a tremendous war cry, does a mid-air somersault, and lands on her feet on the Pirate King's chest.]

Xena: Yes, yes, I am a buff barbarian! [The orchestra starts up.]

I am the very model of a heroine barbarian;
Through Herculean efforts, I've become humanitarian.
I ride throughout the hinterland -- at least that's what they call it in
Those sissy towns like Athens (I, myself, am Amphipolitan).

I travel with a poet who is perky and parthenian[2]
And scribbles her hexameters in Linear Mycenian[3]
(And many have attempted, by a host of methods mystical,
To tell if our relationship's sororal or sapphistical).

And of course, the one I wrote- to the tune of "My Eyes Are Fully Open" from Ruddigore.

PROLOGUE:
Earth that was found some new planets, there humanity was stationed
Browncoats fought Alliance forces in Wars of Unification.
Now there's peace throughout the galaxy, though central folk are richer
And the border folk don't quite fit in to this idyllic picture.
Border moons are somewhat lacking in the food and sanitations,
While all central planet needs are met by Blue Sun Corporation.
Yes, Alliance people run the 'verse, with wallets getting fatter,
While our heroes feast or famine, but it's usually the latter.
